Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards are clearly inheritors of a timeless legacy, creating music that is both original and evocative of a rich tradition. Blending distinctive voices and a wide range of accompaniment (guitar, harmonica, ukulele, clarinet, penny whistle, electric bass), their songs have been well received by audiences around the eastern United States and Canada since 2010. Transcending the genre of folk Americana, their music echoes inspiration from traditional folk duos and singer/songwriters like Ian & Sylvia, Kate Wolf and Neil Young – combining beautiful harmonies and a lyrical intensity, while establishing a unique sound of their own.

Their latest release, Live in Manitoba (Nobody’s Favorite Records 2018), is a collection of songs and short introductions from a thirteen date house concert tour of Manitoba, Canada organized through Home Routes / Chemin Chez Nous.

Both artists are products of central Massachusetts mill and factory towns, and for all their national exposure, they are passionately dedicated to the region and what it has to offer. Each summer for the past decade they have organized the “Massachusetts Walking Tour” where they hike the roads and trails of the Commonwealth, more than 100 miles in less than two weeks, in support of the arts in local communities along the way. Each evening they stop over in yet another Massachusetts town, putting on a free concert there, along with local performers and fellow artists who accompany them on their journey. These annual two-week treks also raise awareness of the trails and greenways in Massachusetts, using music to make important connections. It is a privilege to be able to join them each year for these annual walks and evening concerts.

Mark and Raianne are no strangers to Godfrey’s stage, and we welcome their return with their unique sound and generous delivery.

Claudia Schmidt
Quite simply, an evening with Claudia Schmidt is pure magic. With numerous TV and movie appearances, award-winning scores, and thirteen-plus albums of fresh folk-blues-jazz music, Claudia is best savored live on Godfrey’s stage. The Post Bulletin says, “Those who keep trying to categorize Claudia Schmidt’s music should just give it up and file her under the general category ‘Talent.’ Big talent.” This self-proclaimed “creative noise-maker” specializes in various sounds other than singing and playing, including poems, satire and more, rendering her shows filled with surprises, even for her most devoted fans.

Claudia has been perfecting her craft of performing for almost four decades. It is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music, poetry, story, laughter. drama, and celebrating the moment. Work in clubs, theaters, festivals, TV, radio has added depth and dimension, and because she has always included her original work along with very personal versions of the work of others, what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity, humor, and wonder. The San Francisco Bay Guardian said: Schmidt’s shows are a lot like falling in love. You never know what’s going to happen next, chances are it’s going to be wonderful, every moment is burned into your memory and you know you’ll never be the same again.” More succinctly, Garrison Keillor said “when Claudia sings a song, it stays sung”.

This visit, Claudia brings her latest album Concinnity, about which she says: “On each of these (recording) sessions, I came with a loose (very loose!) list of song possibilities. We recorded live in the studio, no isolation or overdubs. What you hear is how it happened. We were not thinking about a record at all until Mark (Thayer) and I were listening back and realized that this is the story of an unfolding musical friendship over two years, and it feels exciting and joyful and worth celebrating and sharing.” Pick up your copy at the concert!
